DenBuddy

Chrome extension

DenBuddy Sync

DenBuddy Sync is a small Chrome extension that copies your den's roster and advancement out of Scoutbook Plus and into DenBuddy, and files approved completions back the moment you press Send. It works inside the session you are already signed in to, and it never sees your Scouting password. Reads always. Writes only when you press Send.

Chrome and other Chromium browsers. It reads whenever you import and writes only when you press Send, and no Scouting credentials are ever involved.

The extension's status as DenBuddy Settings shows it. Connected means it has adopted your signed-in DenBuddy session, not a second login.

Installing

Five steps, once

The Chrome Web Store listing goes live with the public launch. Until then, packs that sign up get a direct install link.

  1. Install DenBuddy Sync in Chrome and pin it to your toolbar.

  2. Open DenBuddy and sign in. The extension notices the tab and adopts that session, so it acts as you.

  3. Open Scoutbook Plus in another tab and sign in as usual. A small banner confirms the extension is watching.

  4. Browse to your den. The extension reads the responses your own session receives.

  5. Choose the den to import. The roster and advancement are posted to your DenBuddy account, and Settings shows what changed.

Permissions

What Chrome will ask for, and why

Browser extensions deserve suspicion, especially ones near youth data. Here is every permission DenBuddy Sync declares and the reason it needs it.

Access to advancements.scouting.org

The Scoutbook Plus page you are already signed in to. Every call DenBuddy makes — reading your den, and filing the completions you press Send on — runs inside that page as your own session. Your Scoutbook session token stays in the page and is never stored by the extension.

Access to denbuddy.com

So the extension can tell it is on DenBuddy, adopt your signed-in session, and post the imported data to your account. No separate extension login.

Storage

To remember your settings, the den you chose, and which step of a send is in flight. Your Scoutbook session token does not reach this storage at all — it stays inside the Scoutbook page.

Alarms

A 15-minute timer for the background refresh; no data access. While a DenBuddy tab is open and “Keep in sync” is on, that timer refreshes your roster and advancement from Scoutbook in a background tab. A refresh the timer started can only read — the same table below is enforced against it, and every write is refused. Close DenBuddy and the timer stops.

No longer requested, as of version 2: Web request observation · Tabs and scripting · Optional access to other sites · Access to every scouting.org site.

Reads and writes

Reads always. Writes only when you press Send.

This is the complete list. The extension refuses any call that is not on it, and the same table is what the popup shows you and what we file with the Chrome Web Store. Reads happen whenever you import. Writes happen only when you press Send, on rows you have just read on screen.

What it does

One job, done in your own browser: bring the den across so you do not type eight names and four years of advancement into a second system.

  • Reads the dens you lead, the Scouts in them, and their completed requirements.
  • Links each Scoutbook record to its DenBuddy Scout so a second import updates rather than duplicates.
  • Records every import as a run you can review in Settings, with counts and any errors.
  • Shows a guidance banner during onboarding: sign in to Scoutbook, then head back to the DenBuddy tab to finish.

What it will never do

The limits are built into the extension, not promised in a policy. This is the part of DenBuddy that touches Scouting America's systems, so it is deliberately the smallest, dullest piece of software we own. Reads always. Writes only when you press Send.

  • It never asks for, stores or transmits your scouting.org username or password.
  • It never sends anything to Scoutbook that you have not just seen on screen and pressed Send on.
  • It never unapproves, edits or deletes an existing Scoutbook record, and never touches your roster, dens, parent contacts or rank awards.
  • Writing never happens on a schedule. Automatic sync only ever reads.
  • It never runs on sites other than scouting.org and DenBuddy.
  • It never uploads anything while you are signed out, and never on a schedule you did not enable.

Installing it

DenBuddy Sync is built for Chrome using Manifest V3, which covers Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers. There is no Safari or Firefox build today. The Chrome Web Store listing goes live with the public launch, and until then early packs get a direct install link when they sign up.

Troubleshooting

Nearly every import problem is one of four things, and all four are quick to fix.

  • Nothing appears to import: make sure you are signed in to both DenBuddy and Scoutbook Plus, then browse to your den once so the extension sees a response.
  • The extension says it is not connected: reload the DenBuddy tab. The connection is adopted from that tab.
  • The den list is empty: Scoutbook only shows the dens your own account leads. If a den is missing there, it will be missing here.
  • The import ran but the roster looks short: check that you picked the right den, then run it again. Repeat imports update instead of duplicating.

The line the extension does not cross

DenBuddy Sync reads whenever you import, and writes only when you press Send — the completions you just approved, filed through Scoutbook's own Import Advancement path, with the receipt kept. It never unapproves, edits or deletes an existing record. If it ever needs a new permission, we will say so here and in the release notes before it ships.

Extension questions

Is this safe to install?

It runs only on scouting.org and DenBuddy, it holds no credentials, and the only thing it can change in Scoutbook is an advancement import you press Send on, after reading the rows. If you would rather not install it, you can add your Scouts in DenBuddy by hand and upload the CSV yourself.

Does it work on my phone?

No. Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone do not support extensions of this kind. Do the import once on a computer. Everything else in DenBuddy works on a phone.

Do I need to keep it installed?

Yes, if you want DenBuddy to send completions back for you — that runs through the extension in your own Scoutbook session. Everything else (planning, running and recording meetings, and downloading the CSV to upload yourself) works without it.

Does it slow Scoutbook down?

No. It watches the responses your browser already receives. It does not make extra requests while you browse, and it only fetches data when you ask for an import.

What if Scouting America changes Scoutbook Plus?

The import can break, and we update the extension when that happens. Your DenBuddy data is unaffected, because it is already in DenBuddy.

Create the account first, then install

The extension adopts your signed-in DenBuddy session, so signing up takes a minute and the import takes about two.

Free for one den. No credit card. Works with Scoutbook Plus.
